I am a field guide. I've been in the guiding industry since mid 2006, and have had the best time of my life.
A lot of guides have always known they wanted to be in this industry. I wasn't one of the lucky one. When I first left school I was headed for a life in computers. To earn extra money, I got a job as a receptionist at a game reserve about an hour from my home. After 6 months there, I was in love.
Nature was my new calling.
For the next few years I had the most amazing experiences and met the most interesting people. Choosing guiding over I.T. is a choice that I will never regret, although I don't think it's something I could do for the rest of my life. I will hopefully continue to work in the industry.
I have had the great pleasure and fortune to do the work I do. During my years of guiding, I have been lucky enough to see most of South Africa, as well as Namibia, Botswana and Zambia. All these places I have seen for free. I have stayed in 5 star lodges, and I have camped in the Okavango Delta. I have been chased by lions (long story), and I have spent half an hour with guests watching dung beetles fighting over a dung ball.
I learned a lot in my first year because no one helped me to start with, but I was determined to prove myself to those who didn’t believe in me. I learned even more (from the people that I now count as my best friends) in the years to come.
I regret not taking more photos, although I’m happy I experienced things with my eyes rather than through a camera lens.
I will be posting stories on the blog page from my memory, but the dates are probably wrong. I’ve also changed names of the people I worked with to keep them anonymous and my story telling uninhibited.
I hope you enjoy my it.
One of the many passions I still have is computers. I have always wished that I could put all my reference books together on my computer, for easy searching and adding new information at leisure. I recently was introduced to Microsoft Access, and have been able to make my dream a reality. If you are interested in building up your own database of information, have a look at the database page.
I have also decided to use the forum page to help add information to everyone’s database
